Despicable Me Experience Announced as New Attraction for Universal Studios

Universal Orlando Resort recently announced a brand new attraction for 2012. The new Universal Orlando attraction will be based on the blockbuster film Despicable Me. The Despicable Me Experience will replace the Jimmy Neutron attraction which closes this August at Universal Studios.

Despicable Me will become the first-ever Universal animated film to be transformed into a theme park experience. Released jointly by Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment in 2010, the 3-D CGI feature grossed $540 million and is sixth most popular film ever produced by Universal.

The new attraction will feature a 3D experience using a storyline custom made for the ride. The Universal Creative team is working closely with the movie’s producer and founder of Illumination Entertainer, Chris Meledandri, to create all-new animation for an adventure that puts guests right in the middle of the action. All of the hit characters from the movie will be in the storyline, including the super-villain Gru, adopted daughters Margo, Edith and Agnes, and the little minions.

From details released thus far, it seems Gru will bring his high-tech empire and adopted daughters to Universal Studios, where the audience will get transformed into minions themselves. The ride will start in Gru’s lair, include a tour of his secret lab and end with an interactive dance party. Universal has stated they want the attraction to bring to life these characters to create a one-of-a-kind experience.

Despicable Me will open in 2012.
