After visiting the Osceola County Welcome Centre and History Museum, we ventured on out to the Pioneer Village to expand our knowledge of the pre Disney era. The village is set in an expansive lot and features several original buildings, such as the Cracker ‘dog run’ house, Cadman’s house and the citrus packing shed, as well as replica buildings including a school, church, train depot and Seminole village. Interesting information boards and exhibits within the buildings help to gain insight into the early homesteader’s life. Open from 10-4 for self guided tours, entry is US$7 (US$5 if you purchase at the Welcome Centre), parking is plentiful and although there is no food or drink for sale, there are picnic areas and tables for the BYO’s. We had the site to ourselves but it’s crowded on Pioneer day, possibly because of the free entry. Although it's still being developed, the village is a ‘well worth’ wander through history away from the mania of the theme parks that tend to dominate visits to Orlando.

"Great potential- but needs some work."

This historical village has great potential but needs it new buildings to be built -some of the new ones are replicas of the period but will add variety to the village. There is a train station, church family homes a farm and indigenous village which had little in it. The blacksmiths was closed and a shop and school are being built - how about a saloon next? It would have been good to be able to get into more of the rooms and to have had docents in each house to tell you of the history and more hands on things for visitors to do - you could always look at what they did at the Irish American Folk Park in Omagh as a reference point. I look forward to returning in a few years when there is even more to see.

Village is slowly taking shape, but the houses already there are well appointed, and it's fun to learn about the families that lived there.
