Florida Film Festival Hits Orlando Florida
Ten days and 160 films make up the 18th annual Florida Film Festival. This year’s event will pair some of the best of independent films with a food and wine indulgence. The highly acclaimed festival is recognized as one of the top in the nation, where a win at this event can qualify the film for Academy Award consideration. The event, beginning March 27 and continuing until April 5, 2009, is sponsored by the Enzian Theater and Full Sail University. The 2009 Florida Film Festival emphasizes the origins of passion and creativity through the theme “Original Cinema.” The Food and Wine Weekend, the opening weekend component of the Festival, takes this theme one step further with a gastronomical exploration of “Temptation, Indulgence, and Redemption.” Celebrity chef Cat Cora—Food Network’s first and only female “Iron Chef”—will be among the weekend’s special guests.
“This year’s program continues to reflect all of the exceptional qualities we’ve come to associate with Enzian; pairing the best in independent film with the indulgence of food and wine,” said Sigrid Tiedtke, President & CEO. “It was important to bring special guests – like Iron Chef Cat Cora – who embody the sensual and spiritual edge that defines year’s festivities; masters in the culinary and cinematic world who see no boundaries within their craft.”

Orlando Florida Valentine's Day Events
The following information was provided by the Orlando Entertainment Examiner: It can be tough to come up with something special to show that someone special what they mean to you on Valentine's Day. Not everyone wants to do the dinner, flowers, and chocolates thing. Maybe something unconventional is your forte? In a large city such as ours with something different around every corner, I have a few ideas to help you make Valentine's Day a bit more special than just another Hallmark Holiday. Fools for Love at SAK Comedy Lab is a great way for the couple that laughs together to spend the holiday. Admission is $15 or $25 Sweetheart Special for two (includes two bags of popcorn, candy hearts, and two small drinks). This date is much less expensive than a movie date and not only funnier but it will get you come bonus points for creativity. A Valentine Stroll at Leu Gardens is a romantic and surefire way to make your Valentine melt. Pack a picnic (and an extra blanket since our night's have been chilly), and enjoy the flowers, the stars and the live music of Ricky and the Buzzcatz, and the Julie Lyon Quartet. Music in the Galleries ( Morse Museum) is not only incredibly romantic, but a great idea for someone short on cash but not on love. This event is free (although it is on February 13) and blends the museums art with music by 'Beautiful Music Muse Duo', classical guitar and flute. Sex and the Zoo ( Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Garden) is for those Valentines who enjoy a little something risque' and off the radar. Reservations for this event need to be made for seating and dinner. During your evening you will learn about the magnificent ways other animals reproduce. In addition, you can renew your vows with an on-site Reverend or Purchase your loved one a "Growl-in-tine" and receive a plush toy, a picture of a tiger, Zoo materials, and a certificate of adoption. Tickets for this cocktail attire event is $75 per couple and includes appetizers, dinner, two drinks per person, a fashion show by Fairvilla Megastore and good night gift bags to take home. Diamond Rocks! No I'm not talking about the one you wear on your finger, I am talking about the one and only Neil Diamond. For any fans of Mr. Diamond, come out, "turn on your heart light," and spend your Valentine's Day at this tribute concert at the Plaza Theatre. Vegan Valentine's Dinner at Infusion Tea is a safe bet for the lovers who hold a special place in their heart for our four legged (and two legged) friends. This formal four course dinner is $39 per person and includes an organic/vegan dinner complete with wine pairings and tea. Harbor Nights Romantico at Portofino Bay will allow you to feel like you've been whisked away to Italy without the huge bill. Spend the evening under the lights of the Harbor Piazza and enjoy sparkling wines, gourmet food samples, a chocolate station, live music by Nova Era and complimentary hand-rolled cigars. Prices are $35 or $60 VIP and this event occurs on Friday, February 13. Ciao Bella! Last but not least is something for the movie lover or maybe just the Johnny Depp lover ( I am the latter). Edward Scissorhands is playing at the Enzian on Valentine's Day and what better way to spend this holiday of love and all things pink and pretty than with a scarred, social outcast who cannot touch the one he loves? Perhaps one of Burton's all-time best, Edward Scissorhands is a classic and such a fun, new way to spend this, sometimes, overrated holiday. This is an inexpensive and creative way to show your Valentine a good time and who doesn't want to spend an evening with Johnny Depp? No matter where you find yourself this Valentine's Day, I hope it's with someone you love. Whether it's your boyfriend, girlfriend, roommate, sister, mother, dog, partner, wife, husband, I hope you have a fabulous time showing someone what they mean to you. Happy Valentine's Day! David Copperfield to Perform in Orlando, FL
The word "Magic" brings up many connotations. It may recollect ancient and secret magics in Egypt, or conjure up the image of a dark sorcerer of mythology, or summon to our mind's eye dark cloaked members of a coven encircling a field. The word has the power to frighten or enchant, but it always and inevitably leads in one direction ... to wonder and awe. It can also pack in more than 20 million audience members and make more than $1 billion over the last decade for a master of the art of illusion. So it goes for David Copperfield, who in just a few short days will be bringing this world of magic for two shows at Orlando's Bob Carr Performing Arts Center stage with his current touring show, "David Copperfield: An Intimate Evening Of Grand Illusion." Not bad for a nice Jewish boy from Metuchen, New Jersey - one who just happened to begin performing professionally at the age of 12, was the youngest member of the Society of American Magicians, was teaching magic at New York University at age 16, made the Statue of Liberty disappear, and is ranked by Forbes magazine as the 13th highest-paid performer in the world. But with 18 award winning television specials that have reached more than three billion viewers in 40 different countries - netting Copperfield 21 Emmy Awards for artistic excellence on television - one could wonder why he continually returns to the live stage. When posed with that question, and the comparison to film and its own technological marvels, Copperfield hit directly on the very nature of live performance. "I do over 500 shows a year and never get bored because every show elicits a different reaction from the audience, and each new audience member I bring on stage makes it all very fresh and unexpected," he said. "When you can create awe and wonder for a person, live before their very eyes from the stage, I think it even tops the impact of what someone sees on the movie theater with CGI, green screen and the like." In "Grande Illusion," Copperfield strives to take one's dreams and bring them to reality using his art. Sometimes this very personal dream is of winning the Lottery - one of his Grandfather's unfulfilled dreams which helped to inspire this night of magic. And sometimes it's much more: "This entire show is based on making dreams come true," he said. "People don't dream of pulling rabbits out of a hat, but they do dream of seeing someone they haven't seen in some time coming back into their lives. I'm not bringing people back from the grave, but I am transporting 13 people off the stage and hopefully bringing them back safe and sound. "More than anything," he added, "it's the audience participation - whether grand or intimate - that keeps things as fresh as ever ... and moving them emotionally." But it's not just onstage that Copperfield attempts to make dreams a reality. Since 1982 his "Project Magic" - billed on his Web site as a "rehabilitative program established in March 1982 to strengthen dexterity and motor skills in disabled patients, using sleight of hand magic as a method of therapy," has helped disabled patients in 1,100 hospitals throughout 30 countries. It does this not only through magic, but by motivating the individuals and helping to build self esteem. After so many years of creating illusions, one would think that the effort to continue to surpass each past show would get exhausting. Each illusion takes an average of two and a half years to develop for the stage (with an illusion such as "Flying" taking seven years). Keep in mind that this is the man known for levitating across the Grand Canyon, who escaped from Alcatraz, and - in midair over a circle of spectators - made a seventy ton Orient Express car vanish. But Copperfield continues to explore and push his own limits as well as those of his audience, and his influences might be a bit surprising. "I try to look at a challenge and think 'why not' rather than "It can't be done,' and then devise a means of creating the illusion," he said. "My influences - unlike what most people think - came largely outside of the field of magic. "Although magic greats like Keller or the Frenchman Robert Houdon - where Houdini got his name from - were certainly great for the profession, artists like Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly have greatly influenced how I present my show on stage. "Also, in an attempt to move my audiences emotionally, I would have to say film directors like Orson Welles, Stephen Spielberg and Francis Ford Coppola have had a great impact on my career," he added. While musing about the future and longevity of magic, Copperfield has large faith in the sustaining popularity of this entertainment. As he put it, "Magic has been around since the caveman first plucked that pebble out of some unsuspecting cavewomen's ear - much to her delight. The art of magic has a very rich history, and I imagine it will do just fine for many millennia to come. A few things I have always wanted to do is straighten the Leaning Tower of Pisa, put a woman's face on Mount Rushmore, and vanish the moon. So, it looks like I have a busy schedule ahead of me!" " David Copperfield: An Intimate Evening Of Grand Illusion" comes to the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre in Orlando for two shows on Thursday, Jan. 29, at 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. Information courtesy of The Ledger Labels: Orlando_Special_Events

Experience the Other Side of Orlando
With its packed events calendar, there is a lot more to Orlando than its range of theme parks. Indeed from folk festivals and musical celebrations to sporting events and cultural activities, the city puts on a spectacular array of festivities every year. And, with its diverse program, everyone can join in the revelries. Kicking off the year, the annual Zora Neale Hurston Festival is a great event to attend; located approximately 10 miles north of Orlando, it runs for one week in January and attracts over 100,000 people. Designed to celebrate the life and work of Zora Neale Hurston, a writer, folklorist and anthropologist, the program includes a host of activities based around African American culture. The last three days sees the event take place outside, with its Outdoor Festival of the Arts. The organizers put on a fantastic show, with performances, concerts and workshops. There’s also an international marketplace, where you can find food and unique wares from around the world. And, if you’re lucky you may just get to rub shoulders with the stars, with previous guests having included Bobby Womack, Isaac Hayes and Ossie Davis. The Florida Film Festival is another event not to be missed. Having been established in 1992, it runs every March/April and has grown into a massive show. Drawing crowds of over 25,000, its program is packed with an array of exciting seminars and films. In fact, from international releases to student films and local filmmakers, there is something to tickle everyone’s film fancies. The start of spring also brings with it many festivals and events. The popular Fringe Festival is always good fun, with an extremely diverse program of events on offer. Based at Loch Haven Park, performers from across the globe head to Orlando to entertain the crowds. And, having grown in popularity, the performers are now accepted on a first-come-first-served basis, meaning you never know who you will end up seeing! For some fun in the sun, the Wake Zone is definitely worth heading for; running every May to September, anyone can join in the excitement with the range of water slides and sports on offer. Situated on a purpose built, half-mile lake, visitors can indulge in some extreme water adventures, with those brave enough being able to waterski or skate whilst being pulled along on specially constructed cables. And of course, no events calendar would be complete without its annual Christmas celebrations. In true American style, Orlando puts on a spectacular ice show, featuring two million pounds of ice! Starting in November, visitors can head to Gaylord Palms to witness the winter wonderland in all its glory, complete with a real ice bridge and numerous sculptures. Indeed, with so much action and entertainment involved in a holiday to Orlando, the duration of your stay could unexpectedly extend as you continue to find more new and interesting things to do. But with a wide range of hotels in Orlando available, it should not be too difficult to find suitable accommodation should such a scenario occur. And with Orlando having something to offer everyone all year round, the most difficult decision may be choosing what time in the year to visit! Ice! at Gaylord Palms an Illuminating Event
ICE! like you’ve never seen it – Two million pounds of it – is transformed into every imaginable Christmas icon as the star attraction at the Gaylord Palms this Christmas season. The shaped, cut, illuminated and often colored ice takes over a large portion of the Gaylord Palms exhibition center as you walk through the chilly 9 degrees environment in the winter parkas provided by the Gaylord Palms. (Although the parkas are provided, close toed shoes are a must and warm jackets, sweaters and gloves/mittens are highly recommended so you can enjoy the experience.) To give you an idea of the size and scope of the attraction, it boasts 1,500 fluorescent tubing lights frozen within the ice and uses three different types of ice: clear “glass-like” crystal ice; white “snow-pack-like” ice and colored ice.
During your walking tour, you are literally surrounded with ice created sculptures depicting characters and scenes from the holiday season crafted into a series of themed areas. For example, “Victorian Fantasy” is an elaborately set dining room table scene made completely of ice, with no detail spared, including the family cat made of ice. Another of the more memorable sculptures was the ice bridge. That’s right, a bridge that is large enough to hold five to 10 ten people. You actually walk on and over the bridge, made again completely of ice. The entire ICE attraction is carved by a team of 40 artisans from Harbin, China. If you are lucky, you will be able to see one of the artisans working on a sculpture during your tour. Harbin is best known for its annual Ice Park and International Ice Festival. The tour of Ice begins with a very short five minute video that explains how the ICE show came to America and how it is assembled each year; what it takes to make these intricate creations and what it takes to preserve them in Orlando, Florida’s temperate climate. Back to the actual tour, besides the opportunity to have their photo with a 10-foot tall ice sculpture Santa Claus, complete with red suit made of ice, the highlight for kids will be the slides made of ice. That’s right, for youngsters, or the young at heart; ice has been crafted into a large ice slide. There is no sled required; you just glide down sitting on your parka. You can spend as much time as you want on the slides, but the 9 degree temperature will catch up to you very quickly. Finally, the most dramatic and powerful ice sculpture is the crystal-clear life sized replica of the Nativity scene, which depicts the birth of Jesus Christ in a manger. Note: Purchase tickets in advance, especially if attending on weekends, to avoid lengthy lines. Special ICE weekend packages are also available. Call 407.586.4423 for more information. StuntWars Comes to Orlando this October
StuntWars, Inc., the original and best sanctioning entertainment company in the sport of stunt riding, announced today that it is moving its annual October event from Lakeland to the Orlando Speed World. The move was made due to the sudden closing of Lakeland's USA International Speedway, which had been home to the event for the past three years. "When selecting a new location, it was important to us that we stay as close as possible to our hometown of Lakeland and all of our fans who have supported us over the years," said Todd Colbert, President of StuntWars. "The Orlando Speed World is the closest venue able to provide the resources we need to put on an exciting show for our fans, and it puts us in the heart of a big sport bike, university and entertainment town." More than 100 competitors and over 15,000 spectators are expected for the three-day, extreme sports event being held on October 3 - 5, 2008. Circle Wheelies, 360-degree Stoppies, the Leap of Faith, Tank Insane and the Apehanger are just a few of gravity defying stunts that will be on display. Other entertainment will include FMX freestyle, car drifting and street bike freestyle, as well as a Bikini Bike Wash, a Custom Bike Show and live music from Underground Sound. Fans will also have the opportunity to meet the riders during activities each and every day. This year's StuntWars will feature some of the sport's highest profile riders, including Bill Dixon, Dan Jackson, Aaron Colton, Nick Apex, and Teach McNeil. Tickets, ranging in price from $5 for practice rounds to $20 for the main event and entertainment on Sunday, October 5, can be purchased by calling 877-stunt83, or purchased at the gate. Tickets should also be available online at STUNTWARS.COM by midweek. Discounts are available to StuntWars Association members. The gates open at 9 a.m. daily with practice, qualifying and competition throughout the day until 5 p.m. More than 40 vendors offering the latest in gear, apparel and accessories will be on site daily. Stunt bike riders from around the world will be competing for over $12,000 in cash and prizes at this event, while providing spectators with adrenaline- charged events that amateurs should not try at home. This event is round four in the StuntWars 2008 point series where the top-three riders compete to win $25,000 at the end of the season. This StuntWars event is just one of the many initiatives strategically and financially fueled by the new management team at StuntWars. Since StuntWars was purchased by Dorsch Acquisitions in June of 2008, the company has launched a new Web site, created the StuntWars Rider Association, and engaged in active negotiations with several new sponsors and entertainment and sports venues to aggressively expand StuntWars event dates and locations. Big-Name Performers Coming to Orlando
Musical tastes of all kinds can be satisfied in the coming months. Big-name performers of country, alternative, top 40, smooth jazz, Latin music and other genres are coming to Central Florida. Many are performing in both Tampa and Orlando, so the chances to see a favorite entertainer are at least doubled. Allen Johnson, executive director of the Orlando Venues, the department that oversees the Amway Arena, Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre and other venues, said tickets are almost sold out for the British band Coldplay, which will be performing at the Amway Arena on Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m. "The Coldplay show is within about a thousand tickets of being sold out," Johnson said. " Tina Turner and Neil Diamond are both getting close to being sold out as well." In addition Diamond, Enrique Iglesias is one of the artists who will be on stage at least twice in Central Florida. Also performing at the Amway Arena, Iglesias will be melting hearts with his Latin voice and looks on Sept. 25 at 8 p.m. The Iglesias show is about halfway to being sold out, with about 3,000 sold of the 6,000 seats still up for grabs, Johnson said. If there weren't enough hearts melted with Iglesias, maybe the performance of Luis Miguel will do the trick on Nov. 9 at 8 p.m. The Grammy award winner will be performing only one night only in Orlando as part of his "Complices" tour. Johnson said the booking of these major shows sometimes is done a year in advance, and sometimes they are added to the lineup only six weeks in advance of the show date. "But I'd say the average is probably six months out," Johnson said. That's enough time to build excitement about the coming big name. Johnson said he and the Orlando Venues staff is excited about a few of the big acts coming to town. He said Coldplay, one of today's hottest bands, puts on a good show. "Tina Turner coming out of retirement to do a tour is also exciting," Johnson said. "She always does a high-energy show for someone who's 60 years old plus." He said tickets for certain shows will be going on sale in January and February, but he cannot release the performers' names. "There are pretty big names that are coming around," Johnson said. Located in Downtown Disney, the House of Blues has one or more performers nearly every night. Many local bands get to stretch their wings there. Oftentimes, the lesser-known bands can be heard at no charge. Tickets to any House of Blues event can be purchased online at http://www.hob.com/. The Hard Rock Café Orlando, located at Universal Studios Orlando in the CityWalk entertainment complex, will set the stage for Alanis Morissette, who will perform Oct. 21 at 8 p.m. Hard Rock also will ready its 3,000-person concert venue for Classic Albums Live, a tribute band that will perform the tunes of Boston on Sept. 20 at 8:30 p.m. and then the tunes of Led Zeppelin on Nov. 22 at 8:30 p.m. For details or to save a seat to any of the shows, visit the Web site http://www.hardrock.com/. Crowds will gather at the new UCF (University of Central Florida) Arena in Orlando, built near The Venue at UCF, to see Tony Bennett on Sept. 30 at 7:30 p.m. Dolly Parton will bring her southern charm to the arena on Oct. 18 at 6:30 p.m., and Nine Inch Nails will bring its "Lights in the Sky over North America 2008" tour on Oct. 28 at 7:30 p.m. Sarah Brightman and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra also will perform at the UCF Arena. Complete information can be found at http://www.ucfarena.com/. The Venue at UCF, located at Gemini Boulevard North in Orlando, will play host to Blue Oyster Cult, on Oct. 2 at 7:30 p.m., and George Jones a few days later, on Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m. Those tickets can be purchased on Ticketmaster.com. Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, which will be celebrating its 25th-anniversary season, will host Enrique Iglesias, Lyle Lovett, Alanis Morissette and John Tesh. Tickets to most shows go on sale an average of two months in advance of each show. However, sometimes the lead time is very slim, such as was the case with the Enrique Iglesias tour, which will be performing on Sept. 24 at 8 p.m. The tour gave only six weeks' advance notice to sell tickets. Live audiences in St. Petersburg will be treated to the legendary Neil Diamond in concert on Oct. 24 at 8 p.m. at the St. Pete Times Forum. A blast from the past, New Kids on the Block, will be back together for the first time in nearly a decade and a half. Jordan Knight, Jonathan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg and Danny Wood will perform on Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m. The Trans-Siberian Orchestra will perform on Nov. 14 at 8 p.m. Polk County resident Paul O'Neill is a composer, lyricist and producer with The Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Known for his rock operas, O'Neill has produced albums for the likes of Aerosmith and promoted the tours of Madonna and Sting. Former "Phantom of the Opera" stage star Sarah Brightman will delight audiences with her soprano melodies on Nov. 16 at 8 p.m., and the 2005 winner of American Idol, Carrie Underwood, will bring her country crooning tunes to the St. Pete Forum on Dec. 12 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for any of the shows at the St. Pete Times Forum can be purchased at http://www.sptimesforum.com/. Those who go for the alternative sounds will flock to Jannus Landing Courtyard, located at 16 Second St. N. in St. Petersburg. Touted as Florida's oldest and largest outdoor concert venue, the likes of Blues Traveler, Everlast, The Misfits and Presidents of the United States of America, among others, will be performing through December. Dates, times and prices can be found on the venue's Web site at http://www.jannuslandingconcerts.com/. The Tampa and Orlando venues don't get to have all the fun. At least two big acts will come to Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, located at 1875 Silver Spur Lane. Sugarland, a country duo and winner of the CMT Music Awards' Duo Video of the Year Award in 2007 and 2008, will be at the Silver Spurs Arena on Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m. Taking the same stage on Nov. 13 at 8 p.m. will be a Beatles tribute band called 1964…The Tribute "The #1 Beatles Show in the World." Tickets for those and other events at the Osceola Heritage Park can be purchased at http://www.ohpark.com/. Closer to home, audiences at The Lakeland Center, located at 701 W. Lime St. in Lakeland, will be treated to Classic Albums Live's tributes to not only Boston, but also to AC/DC and Pink Floyd. Two of the hottest comedians will come to make Lakeland audiences laugh. Larry the Cable Guy will perform his "Eat, Drink and Be Larry" show on Nov. 14 at 7 and 9:30 p.m. in the Youkey Theatre at The Lakeland Center. Carlos Mencia will bring his raunchy humor to the same stage with his "At Close Range" show on Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m. Also in the Youkey Theatre at The Lakeland Center, Sally Struthers will star in the stage performance of "Nunsense" on Nov. 25, beginning at 7:30 p.m., and the Broadway musical "Oliver" will be performed on Dec. 19 at 7:30 p.m. Favorite Christmas tunes will be sung, country-style, by Mel and Pam Tillis on Dec. 3, at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. For details or to purchase tickets, call 863-834-8100 or visit Labels: Orlando_Special_Events

Orlando Restaurants that Mix Great Food with Live Music
It's one of the more frequent requests I get: "Can you recommend a restaurant with live music?" There's just something about the combined enjoyment of a meal with a performance that appeals to a lot of people. And with the opening of B.B. King's Blues Club last month at Pointe Orlando, Central Florida gained another place where guests can combine a meal with the experience of live music. It's a difficult recommendation to make. I can give you a list of Orlando restaurants that offer entertainment, but it's harder to suggest places that have good food and good music. People tend to have an idea of exactly what they want in both categories. They'd like a nice Italian restaurant, for example, with a strolling guitarist or violin player. Or maybe a steakhouse with a pianist. Usually, if the restaurateur has given it some thought, the music fits the mood of the restaurant. One hardly ever finds a French restaurant with a mariachi band. Just as the types of food vary, so do the styles of music. So you'll find everything from the dulcet tones of a harp to the acquired tasted of accordions to the raucousness of rock bands. B.B. King's tends toward the raucous end of the scale. In fact, my best advice to you is to get any conversation out of the way before you get anywhere near the place. Even the regular house band features 11 musicians, including a full horn section. But B.B.'s isn't the only place to enjoy live music with your meal. Here's a list of some other local restaurants that offer a variety of entertainment styles, something for every taste, musical and culinary. (Note that not all restaurants offer live entertainment nightly. Be sure to call ahead to ask about that evening's schedule and whether there will be a cover charge.) House of Blues: Downtown Disney, Lake Buena Vista; 407-934-2583. Live jazz and blues on limited nights in the restaurant, which reverts to a limited bar menu -- appetizers, burgers, chicken fingers and such -- when the band begins to play, usually at 10:30 p.m. Barney's Steak and Seafood: 1615 E. Colonial Drive, Orlando; 407-896-6864. Featured pianist in main dining room playing standards. Menu is old-style steak and seafood. Del Frisco's: 729 Lee Road, Orlando; 407-645-4443. Upscale steakhouse with a pianist/vocalist in the restaurant's annex, which is next door to the main restaurant. Tolla's: 240 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Winter Park; 407-628-0068. Small, neighborhood-style Italian restaurant with weekend entertainment, usually quiet acoustic music with vocals. Dexter's of Winter Park: 558 W. New England Ave., Winter Park; 407-629-1150. American cuisine with rousing American rock band accompaniment for a young-adult crowd. Press 101: 7600 Dr. Phillips Blvd., Orlando; 407-351-2101. Sandwiches and other light bites with quiet acoustic guitar that matches the sophisticated atmosphere of this tony Dr. Phillips eatery. Corkscrew Grill: 864 S. Sun Drive, Lake Mary; 407-804-0105. Eclectic menu that ranges from American to Asian with jazz in the lounge on Friday nights. Islands Dining Room: Royal Pacific: Loews Royal Pacific Resort at Universal Orlando,6300 Hollywood Way, Orlando; 407-503-3463. Pacific Rim cuisine with a strolling musician playing Hawaiian music to accompany a hula dancer. Grass skirts not provided. Mama Della's Ristorante: Portofino Bay Hotel, 5601 Universal Blvd., Orlando; 407-503-3463. Family style Italian restaurant with strolling musicians -- guitar, violin, accordion, etc. -- playing Italian songs. New Day Cafe: 3195 13th St., St. Cloud; 407-891-2100. Regional American cuisine in a casual, almost downscale setting with acoustic music ranging from guitar to flutes. Cityfish: 617 E. Central Blvd., Orlando; 407-849-9779. Downtown casual seafooder with acoustic alternative rock music on Fridays. Wildside: 700 E. Washington St., Orlando; 407-872-8665. Thornton Park barbecue restaurant with weekend jazz on the patio. American Pie Pizza Company: 2912 Edgewater Drive, Orlando; 407-648-8835. Contemporary pizza joint with a rustic urban dcor and adult-contemporary music on Saturdays. Old Vines Wine Bar: 709 N. Alafaya Trail, Orlando; 407-737-1646. Casual wine bar with light bites and light music, acoustic guitar and vocalists, on weekends. Urban Flats: various locations including 7025 County Road 46A, Lake Mary; 407-515-6024. This flatbread specialty restaurant has numerous locations around Central Florida and each has its own live music schedule, so call ahead. Victoria & Albert's: Disney's Grand Floridian Resort, Walt Disney World; 407-939-3463. Central Florida's poshest -- and most-expensive dining room has a harpist to match the oh-so-elegant ambience. Orlando's Zora Festival Explores Writer's Legacy, Contribution to African Community
The Zora Neale Hurston Festival of the Arts and Humanities is being held Jan. 26 through Feb. 3, 2008 in Eatonville. Each year, tens of thousands come together from across the country to celebrate the cultural contributions people of African ancestry have made to American culture at the nine-day festival. The theme of the 19th annual event is “Ritual and Spirituality in the African Diaspora: An Exploration of the Zora Neale Hurston Legacy.” Named in honor of literary figure Hurston (1891-1960), the dominant female voice of the Harlem Renaissance whose hometown was Eatonville, this unique celebration features museum exhibitions, panel discussions, workshops, youth art displays, performances and concerts. “The festival brings together art and cultural enthusiasts and also serves as a continued reminder of Zora Neale Hurston; her extensive work; the historical significance of the Town of Eatonville and its ability to play an integral role in Central Florida’s tourism,” said festival general manager N.Y. Nathiri. A complete schedule of events is available, so be sure to plan your festival days now! Information courtesy of Orlando Chamber & Visitors Bureau Labels: Orlando_Special_Events
Seven More Ways to Celebrate the Holidays in Orlando
Interested in heading south for the holidays? Here are some tips on celebrating Christmas and New Year's in and around Orlando, Florida. • The joy of snow: Missing the cold, white North? Snow falls nightly in Orlando through New Year's Eve every hour from 6 to 9 on Market Street in Town Center in Celebration, a town built by Disney, a five-minute drive from the Magic Kingdom. Those who visit can have their photos taken with Santa, take horse-and-carriage rides and train rides, and listen to choirs, carolers and concerts. The town has a hotel, a 115-room Old Florida-style inn opened in 1999 that resembles a turn-of-the-previous-century lakeside hotel named Celebration Hotel. • Snow — and fish: SeaWorld Orlando also features snowfalls. "Christmas at SeaWorld" includes festive decorations, snowfalls and live holiday music from classical musicians and carolers. The event is included in daily park admission, which is $64.95 for adults, $53.95 for children ages 3-9, and free for children 2 and under. • A lantern-led tour in Amelia Island: In December each year the Museum of History presents Holiday Luminary tours of historic downtown Fernandina Beach. The tours are held Friday and Saturday by reservation only at 6 and 7 p.m. The tour begins at the train depot on Centre Street. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and military. • Twinkling in St. Augustine: Holiday season in the country's oldest city began Nov. 17 when more than 2 million tiny white lights were lit along its streets during its annual Nights of Lights. The lights remain until Jan. 31. • Holidays with the mouse: Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party at Disney's Magic Kingdom features a series of fun nighttime events for the little ones including holiday shows, fireworks, and magic treats with Minnie and Mickey. Holidays Around the World at Epcot features international holiday storytellers, a daily character tree lighting ceremony and a stunning display of snow-white lights. The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights electrifies Disney Hollywood Studios with millions of sparkling lights. The event is included in daily park admission. • Go wild in Tampa: Busch Gardens Africa hosts a "wild" celebration concluding with its New Year's Eve spectacular. Guests will enjoy four nights of special entertainment, which culminate with a night of fantastic thrills on Dec. 31. The adventure also includes a dazzling fireworks display and nonstop coaster rides until 1 a.m. • Find comfort and joy in Winter Park: For the 29th year, the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, known for its comprehensive collection of Louis Comfort Tiffany jewelry, pottery and leaded-glass windows, lights up century-old Tiffany windows in downtown Winter Park, just north of downtown Orlando, on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. The lighting ceremony is complemented by a free outdoor concert featuring the 150-voice Bach Festival Society choir. The manor showcases the bizarre experiments of Dr. Morphius Mayhem, while the funhouse features the sinister world of Kilmor the Clown. Sneak PeaksExplore the jungle. Busch Gardens Africa unveiled plans to build a new exotic jungle area in the theme park, called Jungala. The four-acre attraction area will be located in the existing Congo area and include tiger, orangutan and gibbon habitats mixed with dense landscaping. Two signature rides will be added including a zip line experience with three different flight patterns and a ride launching guests above a towering waterfall. Jungala will open in spring 2008. Grinchmas began as a festival in 2000 and grew into a featured show, but the resort canceled it before the 2006 holiday season. Christmas Celebrations in Orlando's Theme Parks
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Orlando, Florida theme parks with towering trees, poinsettias, millions of lights, even snow flurries filling every available nook and cranny. This is the "magical" Florida kind for which you don't need to pack a coat, gloves and boots. Each year, the theme parks are transformed into three-dimensional holiday cards and the Christmas ornaments are supplemented by more parades, carolers, themed shows and other spectacles than would fit in Santa's big red, bottomless gift bag. This is what's on tap for this holiday season: Walt Disney World, Orlando -- A 70-foot-high Christmas tree adorned with Victorian-style ornaments is the focal point on Main Street at the Magic Kingdom, along with miles and miles of garland, profusions of poinsettias and twinkling lights galore. New this year is the Castle Light Show, with countless white lights illuminating Cinderella Castle. A Castle light-up ceremony with Cinderella, Mickey, Minnie and the gang is presented each evening. A must-see event at the Magic Kingdom is Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party, presented on select nights from Nov. 12 to Dec. 21. The party features holiday-themed entertainment with Disney characters; the Mickey's Once Upon A Christmastime Parade with floats, dancing reindeer and Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus, among others, plus the Holiday Wishes –Celebrate the Spirit of the Season fireworks display, and yes, Florida "snow flurries." "We come every year," said Vickie Paynor, a visitor from Chicago who came to the party with her family last year. "It's become a tradition –the kids love the parade and we feel like we're in another world." Tickets for Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party are $47.95 for adults and $40.95 for children 3-9 years old (under 3 years old are admitted free). The party is generally sold-out by the evening of the event, so advance purchase is a good idea. Disney-MGM (this park will be called Disney Hollywood Studios beginning Jan. 1) offers the Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights from Nov. 12 to January 6. The light show, in the Studios' Backlot section, boasts millions of lights, animated light displays and "snow flurries." The Hollywood Holly-Day Parade is presented every day. It, and the Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights, is included in park admission. For a bit of international flavor, Epcot presents "Holidays Around the World" from Nov. 23 to Dec. 30. This event presents Christmas legends of various countries including Los Tres Reyes Magos (The Three Magi) in the Mexico pavilion and Pere Noel in the French pavilion. The park is decorated to the nines with towering trees, poinsettias and lights including a synchronized light show, "The Lights of Winter," illuminates a canopy adjoining the World Showcase breezeway and every evening there is a Christmas tree lighting ceremony with Mickey and friends featuring music and storytelling. A special event in Epcot is the nightly Candlelight Processional –featuring celebrity narrators, a massed choir and orchestra. It is featured nightly at the America Gardens Theatre and it's included in admission to Epcot. At the Animal Kingdom Park, Mickey and his gang celebrate the season with Mickey's Jingle Jungle Parade presented from Nov. 12 to Jan. 6. At Camp Minnie-Mickey visitors can meet and greet the Disney characters dressed in their holiday finery and enjoy caroling at Santa Goofy's Holiday Village, which is decorated with Christmas trees and features live entertainment. Sea World Orlando -- "Seasons greetings" always begins with "Sea" they might say at Sea World. The park presents "Christmas at Sea World" each year, celebrating the holiday season with decorations, carolers, and shows –Sea World's trained sea lions, seals and other marine creatures perform--and the forecast calls for "snow flurries." Presented from Nov. 24 to Dec. 25, the festivities are included in the admission price: $64.95 for adults; $53.95 for children. Universal Orlando Resort -- Arguably, the nation's most famous holiday parade, Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York, comes to Universal Studios in December packing its giant balloons, floats, marching bands and Santa Claus too, of course. Each evening Santa himself presides over a ceremony to light up the park's towering tree. Festivities are included in park admission. At Universal'sIslands of Adventure, the mean Grinch is the star of the "Grinchmas" celebration, inspired in "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas". During December, the park's Seuss Landing section is transformed for the holidays and visitors can visit the Grinch in his lair and enjoy themed shows. "Grinchmas" is included in park admission. ICE! at Gaylord Palms Resort a Holiday Treat
The coldest spot in the United States this holiday season will likely be Central Florida, where temperatures are predicted to be 9 degrees Farenheit, Nov. 19 - Jan. 3. This "cold front" of winter weather is part of a flurry of holiday fun at Gaylord Palms® Resort, located five minutes from Walt Disney World theme parks. At this landmark resort, visitors flock to a collection of "cold-weather" holiday activities, like ICE skating, and ICE!, Orlando's coolest holiday attraction, hand-carved from nearly TWO MILLION pounds of ice. Inside, guests explore a whimsical winter wonderland of larger-than-life, three-dimensional hand-carved ice monuments and sculptures, including fantastic frozen creations, slippery ice slides, and memorable holiday scenes. As for the chill, visitors are given oversized parkas to stay comfortable inside the attraction, which is kept at a blustery9 degrees. This year's attraction, which reflects the theme "A Holiday Road Trip," is presented by Coca-Cola and sponsored by Nissan and Sara Lee Food Service. In its fifth season, ICE! will feature several new or revised scenes, including a walk-through igloo and a towering gingerbread candy house, meticulously hand-carved from enormous blocks of colored ice. A guest favorite, the ICE! castle and slides, has been re-designed to reflect a South Pole locale with a colony of penguins surrounding the longest ice slide in the attraction's history. The signature scene, a breathtaking life-size Nativity carved completely of crystal-clear ice, has been described as one of the most breathtaking depictions of the birth of Christ. Dramatic new lighting and a stirring narrative track will ensure guests will continue to pause and reflect on the story behind the season. The enormous structure used to house ICE! is cooled to a chilly 9 degrees. To stay comfortable inside the attraction, visitors are loaned oversized winter coats to wear. "Not only is the artistry amazing to enjoy, but the brisk environment inside the attraction creates a winter holiday experience like no other in the Sunshine State - rosy cheeks and all!" said Kemp Gallineau, general manager of Gaylord Palms. The attraction is carved by a team of 40 artisans from Harbin, China. The talented artisans spend nearly an entire month in Kissimmee creating this one-of-a-kind attraction. Harbin is best known for its annual International Ice and Snow Festival. Each year more than 2,000 sculptors carve a 100-acre walk-through Ice Park from blocks of ice taken from the Songhua River. In addition to ICE!, this year's Best of Florida Christmas program will include 46 days of holiday revelry, including several new or revised activities: ICE! Skating: A larger outdoor skating rink offering a holiday tradition common only in northern climates. Skate rentals are included.
